This is the culmination of a two-week active week initiative, running from Monday, April 25  to Friday, May 6, which also includes a first year outdoor education trip to Connemara and a 5th and 6th year PE trip to the University of Limerick Gym and Swimming Pool.

This is one of a number of events being held as part of our Health Promoting Schools Initiative.  Healthy Eating will be focused on with the Healthy Eating Guidelines being highlighted. Each day during the week, one of the guidelines will be promoted. Extra healthy foods will be offered in the tuck shop and school canteen.  There will also be a dietitian coming to the school to talk to pupils about diet, nutrition and healthy eating.  The theme of health will also be discussed and promoted in all classes in all subject areas throughout the week.

Easter Rising Presentation

EASTER RISING PRESENTATION : There was a great turnout last Tuesday night April 19 in the Resource Centre for Tom Donovan’s 1916 Easter Rising presentation. The pupils from 2nd, 5th and 6th classes in Ballybrown National School opened the proceedings with the recitation of the proclamation and other interesting facts on the Rising. Tom Donovan dealt with the local ( Limerick) involvement in the rising and had some slides and old photographs to compliment his talk.
A big thank you to Martin, Breda, Colm and Mary Hayes from Tervoe who sponsored the tea and refreshments on the night. Martin Hayes presented Tom Donovan with a 1966 ten shilling piece as a thank you and memento  of the occasion. It was a very informative presentation and was enjoyed by all in attendance.
Willie Ryan and Martin Hayes also had some memorabilia on display and these items added greatly to the occasion. Thanks also to Damien McNamara for the loan of a sword and gun holster dating back to this period. It was Martin Hayes’s brainchild and was a great success judging by the comments from patrons afterwards. Thanks to all who helped in any way on the night.

ALPHONSUS “LAMB” POWER

ALPHONSUS “LAMB” POWER : It was with deep regret and sadness that we learned of the passing of Phonsie “Lamb” Power on April 8 last in Langley, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at the age of eighty one. He was born on the Pound Road on January 24 1935. He was a very popular person around the parish. He worked at Hayes’s shop in Tervoe driving the truck. He was also a very staunch member of the Ballybrown GAA Club and was a member of the 1959 Junior Hurling team that won the City Championship. He was also Sacristan in Ballybrown Church during his time living in Ballybrown. He immigrated to Canada in 1963 with his wife Margaret and they raised their family there and he worked in the Island Paper Mills on Annacis Island until his retirement in 1996. His brother William RIP also worked with this company. He came home on many trips on holidays over the past fifty three years and he delighted in meeting up with his old friends and team mates in Ballybrown. To his wife Margaret and his sons Vincent, Aidan and Kevin, and all his family connections we extend our sincere sympathy on their sad loss. His funeral service was held at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Langley on Wednesday April 13 last.
